When NOT to Buy Jewelry

by esther925 5. January 2009 17:26

Don’t get suckered into buying jewelry (or anything of value) on vacation.  Here are a few of my real-life examples:

1.  Seeking a beautiful souvenir from Toronto, I bought a sterling silver ring with champagne-colored pearls.  It looked so lovely on my finger, and the price was very good.  After wearing it a few times, though, it left a green mark on my finger.  I was in complete denial that I had purchased cheap jewelry, so I put it aside for a while, and then wore the ring again for 3 days straight.  This time it left a ghoulish green stain on my finger that resisted vigorous handwashing for two days and slowly faded away.

             <---Vacation sweaters…probably not a good idea, either.

2.  My parents went on a well-deserved cruise to the Caribbean, and on one of the islands my mother found a silver-banded watch, “a real Gucci” according to the salesperson.  She gifted it to me upon returning home.  It was beautiful, and I was happy to wear it.  After a few weeks, the coating of the metal band rubbed off and I experienced an itchy wrist that would not stop.  Taking off the watch was not a relief.  The affected area became like a rash, a pure misery.
