Winter '08 Trend: Brooches/Pins

by esther925 22. December 2008 11:36

Great ways to wear a brooch:

-Incorporate it into your hair in an updo style (after your hair is styled)

-On a V-neck dress or V-neck top, pin it at the base of the V.  It will give the garment a new life.

- On a bulky top or sweater, gather the extra fabric in the back. It can feminize and slenderize you if done correctly.

-Pin onto an evening bag

-Clip it on a ring for a bold look!

-Use it to pin a scarf perfectly into place on your outfit.

This pin is a bold, but timeless option from Zulumoon.com.  It is black/silver, so it is versatile with your wardrobe, and the large asymmetrical metalwork makes it a definite statement piece.

Fashionable Jewelry

by silver_jewelry_fan 11. March 2007 10:15

Jewelry, a personal ornament such as a bracelet, necklace or ring, is made from jewels, precious metals or other substance. During earlier times, jewelry was created for more practical uses, such as pinning clothes together and storage of wealth. Today, jewelry is used exclusively for fashion and decoration. One of the oldest forms of body adornment, jewelry was usually made for people of high importance to show their status. In several cases they were even buried in it.

The first pieces of jewelry were made from natural materials, such as animal teeth, bone, carved stone, shell and wood. High-quality and artistic pieces are made with gemstones and precious metals. Less-costly costume jewelry is mass-produced and made from less-valuable materials. There are also new variations which include wire sculpture jewelry, which uses anything from base metal wire with rock tumbled stone to precious metals and pretty gemstones.

In history, jewelry has been used to define status. During the ancient times of Rome, only certain ranks could wear rings. Later, sumptuary laws dictated who could wear what type of jewelry, based on rank again. The wearing of earrings by Western men in the 19 th and early 20 th centuries was considered effeminate and bizarre. By the early 20 th century, the jewelry industry launched a campaign to popularize wedding rings for men. Engagement rings for men aren’t as popular. By the end of World War II, 85% of United States weddings featured a double-ring ceremony.

A precious metal is less reactive than most elements chemically. Precious metals have high luster and have higher melting points than other metals. A precious metal was important as currency one time in history. Now, regarded chiefly as industrial and investment commodities, precious metals are used in art, jewelry and coinage. Other precious metals include palladium, osmium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and platinum. Platinum is the most widely traded.

As of March 11, 2007, palladium valued at $350 USD/ounce, gold at $650 USD/ounce and platinum at $1250 USD/ounce. Rhodium is actually the most expensive of the precious metals at $6200 USD/ounce. Silver is much less expensive at $12.82 USD/ounce, but is normally considered precious metal for coinage and jewelry. The demand for precious metals is driven by their role as investments and a store of value, as well as practical use.

Fashion and jewelry go hand in hand with many of today’s celebrities, luminaries and famous personalities. Charles Lewis Tiffany, Harry Winston and William Spratling are three of the 21 st century’s most famous jewelers among the stars and those who truly value fashionable jewelry

The Bling behind Tennis

by silver_jewelry_fan 10. January 2006 09:12

Wimbledon is the oldest event in the sport of tennis. It is also referred to as the most famous and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Held every June and July in London, England, the tournament is the third Grand Slam event played annually, preceded by the Australian Open and the French Open. Wimbledon is followed by the U.S. Open.

When it comes to Wimbledon, tennis is only half the story. Although most fans look forward to exciting, spellbound tennis, the other half of the story is the glitz of fashion and sex appeal among celebrities, luminaries and other personalities. The winners and losers are usually judged on what they are wearing—especially when it relates to jewelry.

In 1987, Chris Evert was the number 1 female tennis player in the world. Evert was the winner of 18 Grand Slam singles titles when she was playing in the U.S. Open that year. She was wearing an elegant, light in-line diamond tennis bracelet, which accidentally broke. The U.S. Open match was interrupted to permit Chris to recover her precious diamonds. The radiant and discreet stream of light became the “tennis bracelet” and a major jewelry trend was born.

The tennis bracelet was worn by a new tennis star in the 1990s, Gabriela Sabatini, the Brazilian phenom. In 2002, the lovely Serena Williams wore a $29,000 custom-design Harry Winston’s “Twelve to Twilight” diamond tennis bracelet at the U.S. Open. This time there was an extra secure safety clasp to the bracelet to assure the flexible and fluid piece will remain securely on Serena’s wrist (7 1/2 “). Her bracelet contains 242 colorless diamonds, with twelve carats set in platinum.

Although Serena Williams’ second-skin Puma cat suit was the rave at the 2002 U.S. Open, Wimbledon in 2005 had an even bigger story. The Soviet’s reigning woman’s tennis star, Maria Sharapova, made her tournament debut in a pair of Nike sneakers decorated with 24-carat gold. Today, Maria has her own limited edition of diamond watches. The Tag Heuer Formula One Maria Sharapova Diamond White Ladies Watch is the perfect choice for today’s active, yet sophisticated lifestyle on and off the road.

During the 2005 Wimbledon, a 19-year-old model, Alexis Barbara, selected brief, lacy shorts, glamorous wedge shoes, a large gold cross and a bedazzling diamond engagement ring on her left hand. Moreover, Bec Cartwright, fiancée of Australian tennis star, Lleyton Hewitt, was decked out in a flashy diamond engagement ring around the grounds. The diamond engagement ring is estimated at $200,000.

The Best Jewelry is Silver Jewelry

by silver_jewelry_fan 5. July 2005 09:05

Because silver jewelry is so inexpensive it is very affordable to a lot of unique and varied designs, creating this many designs would be prohibitive to do with platinum or gold. The freedom to design without the fear of going into large debt allows then silver market to flourish around the world. When you couple silver with the cheap alternative to diamond, Cubic Zirconia, you really get some fantastic designs.

At Zulu Moon we strive to keep 8,000+ pieces (styles) of silver jewelry available at all times. This large inventory would be nearly impossible to afford if we specialized in any other precious metal. Lucky for us and our customers, Silver is very reasonable.

When buying silver jewelry, you typically are buying Sterling Silver. Sterling Silver is .925 parts silver and .75 parts of another metal. The reason silver jewelry is not “pure silver” is that silver is a very soft metal and it is easy to deform, scratch and dent. Thus the addition of harder metals such as nickel allows sterling silver jewelry to hold up well over time.

When you purchase Sterling Silver, look for the mark ‘925’, ‘ster’ or ‘sterling’ to determine is you purchased a good product. (if you really like the design and your hand body doesn't’t turn green you might not care if it sterling)

At Zulu Moon, we carry over 1,000 sterling silver rings. Most of these rings have gemstones or some other ornament. All of our gemstone silver jewelry is genuine unless otherwise stated in the product description.

Remember that we have a large selection of cubic zirconia engagement rings and mens rings including wedding bands.
